Allergy Awareness Week - 28 April - 4 May 2015
Allergy Awareness Week focusses on severe allergies, particularly anaphylaxis.
Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction at the extreme end of the allergic spectrum. It is a life-threatening medical emergency and requires immediate treatment.
www.allergyuk.org has a number of useful factsheets on their website which can give you more information on certain condition and how to manage them. All of the Allergy UK findings have been put into a comprehensive report called 'Living in Fear'
Below is a useful acronym developed by Allergy UK to help you spot the signs of a severe allergic reaction.
Recognise the symptoms, recognise the FEAR:
Face – is their face/are their lips swollen? Have they gone pale? Are they lightheaded?
Eyes – is there a look of fear in their eyes? Are they red, watery and puffy?
Airways – are they wheezing/uncontrollably coughing? Do they have shortness of breath? Are they unable to talk? Are they making a strange sound?
Rash – is there a red, raised, itchy rash anywhere on their body especially their face or neck?
On recognising the symptoms you should dial 999 and use an Adrenaline Auto Injector (AAI) if available.
